Tournament Features & Format

Big Bounce Tournament Series

Setup
Teams are guaranteed a minimum of 3 matches in the tournament, but most teams will play a lot more than 3 matches.

Adult (Male/Female) Tournaments

The adult Open tournaments will be broken up into tiers.  This is done in an attempt to ensure an equitable level of play for all teams throughout the tournament and to offer a fun tournament for teams at all levels.

The Elite tier will be composed of 8 teams from each gender (16 teams in Elite for the City Championships).  Between 5 & 6 teams in this tournament (depending on the number of wildcards given) will be granted entry based on cumulative points in tournaments over the previous 2 years.  Up to 2 Wildcards will be given out to teams that do not have enough points; these wildcards will be awarded based on previous tournament results, or results on other competitive tournament circuits.  Finally, 1 or 2 spots will be granted to teams who participate in a qualifier that will be held the Saturday morning of the tournament at 8am.  There will be a maximum of 4 teams allowed in the qualifier, and entry will be based on a first-come, first-served basis.  In order to enter into the Elite Qualifier, simply email us and request a spot.  Teams that do not qualify for the Elite division will be placed in the appropriate lower tier based on how many points they have already earned.

Pool Play and Playoffs for Adult (Male/Female)

Entry into tiers will be based on cumulative points earned from the tournaments over the previous 2 years; the ranking within the tier will be based on the average finishing position over the previous four Big Bounce Tournaments.  Players that are new to the tournament will be given a default rank of a 21st seed (some exceptions will be made for touring teams).

In the Elite tier, the top 3 teams from each pool will move onto the ‘Money Round’ and the last place team in each pool is eliminated.  The first place team in each pool will be granted a bye in the first round and the second and third place teams will cross over.

For the lower tiers, every team is guaranteed a playoff game.  Each proceeding tier will have its own playoff bracket in which every team in that tier will have at least one meaningful game in.

Pool Play and Playoffs for Youth

Teams will be ranked based on their previous finishes in Big Bounce tournaments and OVA tour events.

Each team is guaranteed at least one meaningful playoff match in their age category.  All playoff games will be best of 3.  Top finishers will receive prizes from VSP.

Coed 2s (Open and Intermediate)

Teams will register into either the Open or the Intermediate division based on a personal analysis of their playing level.

Registration in the Open division is encouraged for competitive teams that are able to play beach volleyball at a high level with only 2 players on the court.  Top finishers in the Open division will be awarded cash.

The Intermediate division is encouraged for people who are still volleyball enthusiasts, but don’t have the ability to compete with teams at the most competitive skill level.  The registration fee for this division is lower to encourage participation and expansion of the game at all skill levels.  Top finishers in this division will be awarded prizes from our sponsor VSP.

Match setup for pool play

There will be no cap in any set.  Each team will be allowed a maximum of one 30 second time-out per set.

Pool of 3: Matches will be best 2 out of 3, first 2 sets to 21, and third set, if necessary, to 15.  One point will be awarded for each match won.

Pool of 4: Matches will be 2 sets to 21.  One point will be awarded for each set won.

Pool of 5: Matches will be 2 sets to 15 points.  One point will be awarded for each set won.

Match setup for playoffs for all divisions

There will be no cap in any set during the playoffs.

All matches in the playoffs will be best 2 out of 3, first 2 games to 21, third game, if necessary, to 15.

Playoffs will be single elimination.

There will be a 30 second technical time-out at the third side change of the first two sets, and each team will be allowed one 30 second time-out per set.
